Genentech is hiring interns for the Discovery Oncology Summer Internship in 2026. Find out all the key details below and learn how to apply successfully!

About Genentech

Genentech is a world-leading biotechnology company and a member of the Roche Group. Well known for its pioneering work in oncology, immunology, and neuroscience, the company has changed how modern medicine approaches serious diseases. Genentech stands out for one defining reason: its science is personal. Research teams include industry-recognized experts who translate breakthrough discoveries into real treatments.

Interns here are not treated as observers. They are immersed in research labs, guided by brilliant scientists, and exposed to the same thinking that drives major drug development programs. The culture values curiosity, courage, and purpose — making Genentech one of the most respected names in biomedical innovation.

Internship Overview

📌 Position: 2026 Summer Intern – Discovery Oncology

📍 Location: South San Francisco, California

🗓 Duration: 12-week summer internship (May/June start)

⏱ Time Commitment: Full-time (40 hours/week)

This internship is focused on experimental oncology research. Interns contribute directly to scientific work that supports the discovery of next-generation cancer therapies. You’ll join a collaborative lab environment where cell culture, in-vitro biochemistry, molecular biology and experimental design play a major role.

Unlike internships that offer limited lab exposure, this program gives students hands-on responsibility from day one. You’re working inside a research group that aims to understand cancer dependency pathways — a foundational area in drug discovery.

Roles & Responsibilities

As a Discovery Oncology Intern, you will:

• Design and conduct experiments using cell culture and biochemical techniques
• Work closely with scientists to evaluate oncology targets
• Keep detailed electronic laboratory notes for reproducibility and reporting
• Analyze data and interpret outcomes with guidance from research mentors
• Present scientific findings to small groups during team meetings
• Participate in lab discussions, planning sessions, and troubleshooting activities

Qualifications & Eligibility

To apply, candidates must:

• Be currently enrolled in a PhD program
• Study a relevant discipline: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or related
• Have hands-on lab research experience in cell biology or biochemistry
• Be able to work onsite in South San Francisco
• Be legally authorized to work in the U.S. (Genentech does not sponsor for internships)

Preferred skills include:
• Experience with CRISPR/Cas9, PiggyBac systems, or RNAi
• Knowledge of biochemical protein purification or in-vitro reconstitution
• Strong communication and collaboration strengths
• Ability to contribute to a scientific culture grounded in integrity and curiosity

Unique Insight for Applicants

This internship is ideal for PhD candidates who want exposure to drug discovery early in their research careers. Many academic labs focus on mechanistic depth alone — but Genentech combines mechanism with therapeutic direction, which trains interns to think like drug developers, not only scientists.

A major advantage: interns often walk away with strong publication contributions, advanced technical skill sets, and professional relationships that shape future postdoc or industry paths.

To stand out, highlight:
• Any experience troubleshooting experiments
• Times you optimized protocols or designed controls
• Cross-disciplinary exposure (e.g., dry + wet lab)
• Your interest in translating biology into medicine

This role rewards scientific curiosity and practical problem-solving — not just academic credentials.

Benefits & Perks

Pay: $46/hour (California rate)
• Paid holidays during internship period
• Direct collaboration with top oncology researchers
• Hands-on exposure to drug discovery workflow
• Ownership of meaningful scientific work
• Strong foundation for industry careers
