As a Software Engineer  you will play a vital role in the development and delivery of high-quality software solutions that power Barclays’ global operations. The role involves designing, developing, and optimizing mainframe applications that support millions of customers and ensure smooth banking operations. You’ll work in an environment where technology meets finance, helping drive innovation, security, and performance at scale.


Roles & Responsibilities

As part of the Barclays technology team, you’ll be expected to:

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable and efficient mainframe software solutions that meet business requirements.
• Work on technologies such as JCL, COBOL, DB2, and VSAM to build reliable and high-performing systems.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate business needs into functional solutions.
• Review code, troubleshoot system issues, and ensure applications run efficiently and securely.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by recommending process optimizations and technology upgrades.
• Adhere to secure coding standards, ensuring the safety and compliance of all applications.
• Create and execute comprehensive unit tests to maintain code quality and performance standards.
• Stay updated on emerging technologies like z/OS Connect API, IMS, and evolving mainframe frameworks.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of collaboration, learning, and innovation.

Through this role, you’ll work at the heart of Barclays’ digital operations, gaining exposure to global financial technology projects and complex enterprise-scale systems.


Qualifications & Eligibility

To be successful in this role, you should have:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Strong hands-on experience in JCL, COBOL, DB2, and VSAM.
• Familiarity with IMS, z/OS Connect API, and other modern mainframe integration technologies.
• Knowledge of banking or financial systems is a plus.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills.
• Understanding of risk management, software delivery processes, and digital transformation best practices.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams.
• A proactive attitude toward innovation, learning, and continuous improvement.
