Stripe’s internship program is designed to provide hands-on exposure to its large-scale systems and technologies. You will be paired with a dedicated intern manager, join a real product team and work on projects that matter to Stripe’s customers. Each project is part of the team’s actual roadmap, so you can expect to see your code go live during your internship. This experience offers a blend of engineering challenges and mentorship, ideal for students wanting to grow both technically and professionally.

Roles & Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer Intern at Stripe, you’ll take on responsibilities similar to full-time engineers, including:

Writing production-grade software that has a direct impact on Stripe’s customers.
Giving and receiving technical feedback through code reviews, design discussions and pair programming.
Collaborating with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders to proactively gather feedback and refine solutions.
Learning quickly by asking thoughtful questions, working closely with your intern manager, and clearly communicating the status of your work.
Presenting your project outcomes to your team and the wider organization at the end of the internship.

Past intern projects have included rebuilding the statistics aggregation service, building new service discovery systems and improving the error messages in Stripe Checkout. These examples show the scale and relevance of the work you’ll handle.

Qualifications & Eligibility

To apply, you should meet these minimum requirements:

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related discipline.
Strong fundamentals in computer science and some experience programming (side projects, coursework or previous internships).
Comfort learning unfamiliar systems through independent research and mentorship.
Ability to work effectively on multi-person projects, taking feedback from mentors and peers.

Preferred (but not mandatory):

At least two years of university education or equivalent work experience.
Specialized knowledge in one or more areas (e.g., frontend technologies, service architectures).
Experience writing high-quality pull requests with good test coverage.
Familiarity with multiple languages—Stripe mainly uses Java, Ruby, JavaScript, Scala and Go, but strong fundamentals are valued over specific languages.
Clear written communication to explain your work to teammates and stakeholders.
